Earlier today Amazon.ca let slip a product page that indicated there is a new Splinter Cell on the horizon. Although the page has since been taken down, the listing for “Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 2018” is the best evidence we have had recently that that franchise will return soon.
We last saw protagonist Sam Fisher in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist released in 2013. In the past five years, Ubisoft has been working on many other franchises including two Tom Clancy-inspired titles Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six.
Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat did make passing mention of the franchise at last year’s E3 press conference remarking that the company is “not forgetting Splinter Cell”. With plenty of other successful games launched this year, they are quite busy but fans of the stealth action franchise remain hopeful that Fisher and the Fourth Echelon will return.
Much of information about a new Splinter Cell is speculation at this stage, even Amazon’s premature product page could have been a mistake. Some are expecting to see a reveal during this year’s E3 in June, however, we could hear details as early as GDC later this month.
With the success of the freshly renewed Assassin’s Creed franchise, it will be exciting to see how Ubisoft breaths new life into Splinter Cell.
