Doom Boxart – Does anyone play the cover?

It’s been almost 12 years since the last Doom title was released, and it is without doubt one of the most anticipated titles of this year. Gameplay trailers have left gamers foaming in the pants at the prospect of jumping back into one of the most gory game series’ ever made.

The release date of May 13th has only just been announced, but rather than focus on that, the majority of media coverage the title is getting right now is negative – and believe it or not it’s all focussed on the games boxart. No… really.

Not just one short sighted website has been critical, but loads of them! Is there seriously anything particularly wrong with what you see above? Apart from the tint – it kind of looks like it’s been pissed over.

Here are just a couple of reactions from around the web;

That art is painfully boring and dull. You have a generic-looking robot soldier in front of what appears to be fire.
Some bellend, Polygon

It looks like something you’d see out of a budget-priced titles, not DOOM.
Another bellend, Game Revolution

Guys, seriously? While it may be somewhat uninspiring in comparison to the actual gameplay, what is it these people want to see on those shelves – the very same shelves frequented by thousands of children day in day out, spending their hard earned pocket money on the latest Lego Dimensions packs. Is it really necessary for them to be greeted by shitloads of gore? Personally I don’t think so.

This is Doom. The return of an iconic franchise, the gameplay trailers for which have already done more than captured the imagination and passion of not only the generation it used to appeal to, but also the gamers of today, many of whom will experience Doom for the very first time with this release come May 13th.

Get a grip, people. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this boxart. If you played the boxart then fair enough, complain about it – I don’t know about you guys, but personally I will be playing the game inside the box, instead.
